Yiwei Chen / 陈艺唯

_{陈艺唯 / Yiwei Chen}_{Yiwei Chen is an animation director and artist from Hunan, China, currently based in Amsterdam. She earned her MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art in 2023 . Yiwei creates hand-drawn 2D animations exploring deep emotions and self-reflection. Her films have been selected for over 25 international festivals, including Annecy , Animest, and ZINEBI.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores dreams, intuition, and childhood memories, focusing on the quiet tension within intimate, often unspoken experiences shaped by family and early life. I am interested in psychology, cult film, and surrealism, which strongly influence my creative approach. I work primarily with hand-drawn 2D animation, using soft pastels, oil pastels, colored pencils, and sometimes stop-motion or mixed media, embracing the unpredictability of real materials. My films favor darker, surreal tones and textures that reflect inner emotional landscapes and blurred realities. Daydreaming and fantasy inform much of my visual creation, and I allow spontaneity and intuition to guide the process: when an idea arises, I immediately begin writing or drawing, letting scenes emerge naturally without predetermined structure. I enjoy this sense of mental drift, allowing the work to lead me deeper into the unconscious.}
